Nick joined the Halifax Rugby League Referees Society in the 1990’s.

By the mid years of the decade, he was a senior referee being in the middle for 16 Super League games between 1996 and 1999. In one game Nick had 5 Wakefield Trinity players in the sin-bin, leaving them with nine men at one time as Nick decided to get tough with the visitors’ delaying tactics.

Perhaps a highlight for Nick was taking charge of the USA v Canada international game during the 2000 Emerging Nations World Cup after he had made his international refereeing debut in the Wales v Ireland game in 1999.

He also refereed in the Northern Ford Premiership including in 2001-02 games featured on the Yorkshire TV programme “Rugby League Raw”. Handled 1
