Earlier Luddenden teams
The earliest mention of a rugby team in Luddenden was in 1890 and was a team that lasted just 3 years although there was a team playing near the railway station in Luddendenfoot from 1880 all the way through to 1900. Luddendenfoot became a Northern Union side.
After a 10-year hiatus, another Northern Union Rugby club was formed in Luddendenfoot during 1910 but lasted just two seasons before yet another new club arose as Luddendenfoot in 1922 but this lasted only a single season.
The next iteration of a Luddenden Rugby League team was in 1927 when a team was formed and may also have used the neighbouring village of Midgley in its name.

They were pictured in the 1927-28 season showing thirteen players and three committee members. This teams seems to have been around only for a couple of seasons before another Luddenden team was formed in 1932 surviving all the way through to 1938.
A Luddendenfoot team had also been revived in 1937, renting a field at Top Shuttles (or Top Shutts) down Naylor Lane at Midgley and playing in the Under-21 and Under-17 leagues. They played for three seasons before they folded, presumably succumbing to the requirements of the Second World War.
