1980’s

The decade started well with Mixenden playing in Pennine League Division 2 finishing in 4th place.

Scan of white and blue Halifax Cup Final 1981 Mixenden v Worth Village ProgrammeIn 1981 the club were back at Thrum Hall, captained by Colin Hardcastle, for the Halifax Cup Final this time against Keighley side, Worth Village. Mixenden’s Bob Hanley was awarded the Man of the Match.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mixenden continued their good form into the 1982-83 season winning 13 of their 18 games and being promoted to the Premier Division.

Of all the players throughout the seventies and eighties, the one remembered most as a great team player was Steve Helliwell, a really crafty but feisty hooker.  Gary Beverley explained:

“he always got going when the going got tough. One game we were struggling to get any ball. I said to Steve, “you need to sort it.” After the next scrum, the opposition scrum half was taken off.  And we got some ball!”
