Club Grounds and Headquarters

The Mixenden club played and was based from several locations over the years.

Originally based in  Mixenden, the team trained behind the Mixenden Community Centre and changed in a terraced house below the reservoir.

The main base was the New Inn ( now The Springhead) pub at Mount Tabor.  Landlord and landlady, David and Jill, were always welcoming. There adverts for the pub included:

Gary Beverley recalls Sundays in the New Inn where there would be thirty lads for the whole Sunday lunchtime session.

Briefly,  the headquarters moved to the William Deighton public house (Then Portman and Pickles, then The Jubulee)  on Market Street in the middle of Halifax.  However, the distance from the playing field became an increasing issue.

With the lack of playing fields in the village and new estate, the club played on a farmer’s field at Moor End almost opposite the old Stone Chair public house. Arnie Thorpe, a long time MIxenden player recalls the  pitch well:

“it was up a track and we had an old cowshed converted into changing rooms. During the foot and mouth epidemic, there were disinfectant baths for us to clean our boots.”
