The Brighouse Bus

As a forward-looking club, Brighouse Rangers committee decided in the 1980’s to raise funds for a club bus. After some fundraisers and some generous sponsorship, the club was in a position to buy a bus.

Jeff Greenwood and others went to a commercial vehicle sale in Leeds where 20-30 buses were up for auction. They were outbid on everyone they fancied.  But did get a bus as Jeff Greenwood explained.

“A bloke next to us had noticed that we had missed out and said he had an old bus in his scrapyard they could buy.  It turned out to be an old Bedford bus/van with a 4.2litre petrol engine and a split windscreen! The club bought it, did it up, and painted it black with sponsors’ names on the sides.”

The club had its BUS and Jeff became “Jeff the Driver”. It regularly ended up back at Jeff’s house. One Christmas it became Greenwood family transport to get the family to a do in Sowerby Bridge.

It took teams all over to games but didn’t always reach its destination.

One day it was heading for the Blackpool 7’s tournament but only made it halfway up Godley Bank. Frantic phone calls were needed to all the players’ wives to bring their cars to get everyone to Blackpool.
